Me, yapping about Atom Eve
at New York Comic Con

Thanks for visiting!

My name is Mary, and I am a Filipino-Canadian narrative designer/writer based in Calgary, Alberta.

My start in the games industry began in 2020, when I interned with The Beans Team on an unannounced action game for Devolver Digital. There, I had the privilege of growing my skills and learning from industry veterans. When the summer ended and I was offered full-time work, I jumped at the chance to stay.

While I was with Beans for nearly three years, growing from a junior to a narrative-focused game designer, I also experienced my first studio-wide layoff. I was fortunate enough to receive an offer to work on Invincible Presents: Atom Eve (the very next day!) and, by the end of the year, I had my first shipped credit.

Since then, I've been freelancing, working with indie studios across Canada. As a narrative designer, I believe in championing synergy between gameplay and narrative, and that constraints can be a boon on any project.

When I'm not working, you can find me attending mystery theatre, spending time with my dog, or fiddling with unsynchronized subtitles on Eastern European fairy tale films from the 70s/80s.

- TESTIMONIALS -

Jill Murray
Creative and Narrative Director (Discoglobe Interactive)

"I've worked with Mary Arroz in so many different contexts. She was my colleague at Beans, I hired her onto my team for Invincible Presents: Atom Eve, and she's worked with me as a consulting narrative designer and writer on client projects and original IP for Discoglobe Interactive. Mary is a terrific all-around game designer, narrative designer, and writer. She's a resourceful problem-solver, is perceptive, asks great questions, and the work she turns in--which is always on time and to standard-- is inspired. Oh, and if you need her to do panels or PR for your game, she's good at that, too. My only regret is that I don't have projects to invite her onto all of the time. I fully expect to be working for her at some point, if she'll have me."

Anthony Han
Project Lead (Aerobox Games)

"Mary consistently delivered high-quality work on time and brought a lot of great original ideas. Her contributions ultimately pushed the project in the right direction and made shipping possible. I'm glad to have worked with Mary and would happily work with her again."

Shawn Kittelsen
Senior Vice President, Creative(Skydance Interactive)

"Mary did FANTASTIC work on Atom Eve. Highly recommend bringing her onto your team for narrative design & game writing!"

Devon Wiersma
Level Designer & Game Developer

"Mary is a narrative powerhouse! She managed so much narrative design work while simultaneously providing thoughtful and well informed insight to the design team. She's immensely dedicated to her craft and it always shows!"

Patty Shannon
Game Designer

"Working with Mary was a joy! She's super curious and always willing to learn new things. While on the project I saw her go from not knowing much about blueprints to being able to implement first pass versions of game systems. She is always contributing wild and inventive ideas to the greater project and championing narrative as it ties into the gameplay. Mary would make a strong addition to any design team!"
